- Marine regulatory/institutional policy
- International environmental law/law of the sea

Six months prior to a GESAMP session the Pool of Experts is searched and a shortlist of candidates is prepared. At each session of GESAMP the Executive Committee identifies the number and profile of expertise of GESAMP Members to be appointed for the following session. The Executive Committee selects the new members based on the following criteria:
- Professional qualifications and experience
- Fields of expertise required to service GESAMP's work plan and maintain the necessary multidisciplinary composition
- Willingness to serve voluntarily in an individual capacity, to work intersessionally, and to declare any conflicts of interest
- Maintenance of geographic and gender balance
Other desirable characteristics of the collective GESAMP membership include the ability to work cooperatively in an interdisciplinary group, knowledge of national and/or international initiatives for marine environmental protection, experience with scientific advisory processes, and a balance among employment sectors (academia, Government, private sector, NGO).
