Prof. Ahmad H. Abu Hilal holds a BSc in chemistry and geology from Cairo University; MSc in environmental chemistry from Alexandria University, Egypt and a PhD in chemical oceanography/marine chemistry from Liverpool University, UK.
Prof. Abu Hilal has over 42 years of national, regional and international experience in environmental issues. He has published over 60 papers in peer reviewed national and international journals in the above areas. His research and scientific expertise in marine chemistry is centred on marine environmental pollution, environmental monitoring (nutrients, heavy metals, hydrocarbons, marine and litter), environmental impact assessment and coastal zone management.
He contributed to the establishment of the University of Jordan-Aqaba Branch between 2009 and 2013 as the first (founding) Executive Director; first (founding) Assistant President; and first (founding) Dean of Faculty of Marine Sciences. He was the first Jordanian Director of the Marine Science Station (MSS); the first ever and the only one Research Centre along the Jordanian coast of the Gulf of Aqaba/ Red Sea, which affiliated to the University of Jordan (in Amman) and Yarmouk University (in Irbid-north Jordan) since 1974. He worked as a staff member in The University of Jordan and Yarmouk University (Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences). He worked for the United Arab Emirates University as the first (founder) researcher in the Marine Section of the Desert and Marine Research Center. He led and conducted research and environmental monitoring programmes in the coastal waters of the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. He was appointed as the UNESCO Chair in Environment and Sustainable Development at the Deanship of Scientific Research at the University of Bahrain in 2003 and initiated an MSc Programme in Environment and Sustainable Development supported by UNDP and UNESCO-Cousteau Ecotechnie Programme of UNESCO. He served as a Member (founder) of the Executive Council and Member of the Steering Committee of the Inter-Islamic Science and Technology Network on Oceanography (INOC), Izmir, Turkey in 1994.
He has been a member of many national and regional scientific committees and societies as well as a member of editorial boards of many national and international scientific journals. Now Prof. Abu Hilal is working as a private consultant..
