On June 5th 2026, GESAMP Chair, Wendy Watson-Wright, offered a virtual presentation to the 2026 class of the Nippon Foundation-POGO Centre of Excellence for Observational Oceanography entitled The UN, GESAMP and POGO: Champions for Ocean Sustainability. The enthusiastic students from Bangladesh, Ecuador, Colombia, Kenya, South Africa, Brazil, Philippines, Indonesia offered ideas on emerging ocean issues, how POGO and GESAMP could better collaborate, and why it is important to continue oceanographic capacity development in the global south. The course was offered by the International Ocean Institute-Canada and continues until July 14th.
