Ballast Water Managements Systems of the Future

Ballast Water Managements Systems of the Future

Globallast Monograph Series No. 20
GESAMP Reports and Studies No. 83

The transport of marine organisms from one place to another by ship, i.e. so-called invasive species, presents a significant risk to the ecological balance of the marine environment as well as to amenities dependent on it. Ballast water management systems are designed to treat ballast water in order to reduce the risk of transporting organisms – most use active substances or chemical to achieve this, which present risk in their own right. This Globallast/GESAMP report looks at ballast water systems of the future which could reduce the risks of transporting invasive species but without using chemicals.
