The first session of the Joint Group of Experts on the Scientific Aspects of Marine pollution, was held at IMCO Headquarters, London, from 17-21 March 1969.
GESAMP was established under the sponsorship of:
- Inter-Governmental Maritime Consultative Organization (IMCO)
- Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)
- United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)
- World Meteorological Organization (WMO)
The group discussed its methods of work in some detail and considered generally the inter-relationship of the diverse aspects of marine pollution involved. Certain experts were invited to submit papers on specific subjects in time for the next session, so as to account for the insufficient time available.
