Working group on biofouling is meeting virtually from 19 to 21 October

The working group on biofouling management is holding its fist meeting virutally from 19 to 21 October 2020. The meeting is being chaired by Ms. Katja Broeg. The group has nominated Mr. Marion Tamburi (University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science) and Mr. Pei-Yuan Qian (Hong Kong University of Science and Technology) as its Vice Chairs.

The broader objective of the group is to develop best practices and build capacity in developing countries towards the implementation of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and other relevant guidelines for biofouling management and to catalyse overall reductions in the transboundary introduction of biofouling-mediated invasive aquatic species, with additional benefits towards the reduction of GHG emissions from global shipping.

The agenda for this first meeting includes exchange of knoweldge on the issue, organization of thematic groups, allocation of responsibilities according to expertise. By the end of the week, the group expects to have developed a draft outline of the report and to plan next steps.
