The GESAMP Working Group Co-Chair (Chris Vivian) and an expert from the group (Miranda Boettcher), will participate in the One Ocean Science Congress (https://one-ocean-science-2025.org/), taking place in Nice, France, from 3 to 6 June 2025.
The Congress serves as a key scientific event ahead of the third UN Oceans Conference, aiming to deliver critical insights on the state and future of the ocean to global leaders, policymakers, and society. With a focus on science-driven decision-making, the event seeks to advance ocean conservation, sustainable use, and climate solutions.
During the Congress, WG 41 will highlight its work on Ocean Interventions for Climate Change Mitigation, including:
.1 the development of an Ocean Intervention Assessment Framework (OIAF) designed to help a wide variety of potential users (i.e. state regulators, policy-makers, developers, funders and other stakeholders involved in assessing and permitting proposals) to holistically assess relevant ecological, scientific, institutional and societal issues that may arise in relation to ocean intervention proposals; and
.2 the publication of A Scientific Summary for Policy-Makers – The State of the Science for Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR), which reviews the current state of the science for mCDR techniques with a focus on those techniques that are currently under active investigation, available here
This participation underscores GESAMP’s commitment to bridging science and policy to safeguard ocean health and its vital role in climate resilience.
