The Chair of GESAMP, Peter Kershaw, presented the work of GESAMP at the 20th meeting of the UN Open-ended Informal Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea (ICP), which was held at the UN headquarters in New York, from 10 to 14 June.

The Chair of GESAMP, Peter Kershaw, presented the work of GESAMP at the 20th meeting of the UN Open-ended Informal Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea (ICP), which was held at the UN headquarters in New York, from 10 to 14 June as one of the panellists invited to speak at the meeting. Mr. Kershaw’s presentation focused on the use of science to advise the UN system, and outlined how GESAMP, during the fifty years of its existence, has provided policy relevant and scientific advice to its Sponsoring Organizations. The presentation also highlighted some examples of working groups and how they are contributing to the work of the Sponsoring Organizations.

The ICP is the annual meeting at the UN headquarters, which informs UN Member States and other stakeholders on current issues of relevance to the ocean, each year focussing a specific topic. This year the theme of the ICP was "Ocean Science and the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development".
